Explosion in Taiwan chemical plant kills 1

The Associated Press

TAIPEI, Taiwan (May 18, 2001 9:31 a.m. EDT) - One person was killed and about 100 others injured on Friday when a boiler exploded at a chemical factory in northern Taiwan, police said.

Most of the injured were cut by glass splinters and other debris that rained down up to 660 feet from the factory in an industrial zone in Hsinchu County, police said. Three people were hospitalized, local media reported.

Authorities did not immediately know what caused the blast.

Hau Lun-pin, director of the Environmental Protection Administration, said the agency was closely monitoring the explosion but has not detected leaking toxic materials.
