Hi Stan,

I just went to Yahoo and typed in a search for E.C.Stearns. Quite a lot of interesting references came up including some old tool catalogs. You may find a picture of the tool you have.

Good Luck,

Maybe an ear-punch. Used to (sheep, Australia) register a punch- design (slot, diamond, club, heart,spade,half-circle, V, etc) which would help distinguish between neighbour's stock when otherwise unbranded); and then whether clipping was done on right or left ear told whether lamb was male or female. Earmarked, castrated and tailed lambs all at same time. Could later draught lambs as ewes or wethers just by their ears as they ran through a stock race. Sometimes even where on ear distinguished year of birth, so some years later you could draught off ewes to be "cast for age" (culled) just by their ears.

They made nose awls for ringing bulls also.
