Railroads in Tavares, FL in 1900

greenspun.com : LUSENET : ACL and SAL Railroads Historical Society : One Thread

My father worked for ACL for forty-seven years. His father is listed in the 1900 Federal Census of Tavares, FL as a telegrapher. What railroad(s) would have run through Tavares at that time? Would appreciate any help anyone can give me.

According to information in The Story of the Florida Railroads 1834 - 1903, the Seaboard Air Line did not take over a predecessor line, the Florida Central & Peninsular RR (from Wildwood through Tavares to Orlando and Lake Charm (Oviedo) until 1903. So, the line in 1900 would have been the Florida Central & Peninsular RR. The old FC&P station in Tavares survived into the l980's when it burned to the ground. In its last years, it was a very nice antique shop! I hope this information helps you!

There were three railroads in Tavares, the PLANT SYSTEM(later Atlantic Coast Line), SEABOARD AIR LINE RR and TAVARES & GULF R.R.(a short line).
