What kind of fruit is this?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I have been puzzled by this tree in the back of my house. You see I have know idea what kind of tree it is. It has these green, fuzzy, lemon shaped objects on it. Right now the largest one is about the size of a silver dollar. I cut one open once and it is yellow on the inside. What is it? Can anyone help?

Please tell us what state your in. What does the fruit smell like? What do the trees leaves look like? The bark? The size? Are there seeds inside? What size and shape? Do animals eat this fruit? Give us a bunch more info, maybe we can help.

What shape are the leaves - heart, oval, pointed, maple-like, fern-like? How tall is the tree - does it have a main trunk, or is it more like a bush? How about the bark - deeply grooved, smooth, grey or brown? Where are you located - pacific northwest, southern state, New England, desert, mountainous? A few more clues from you would help solve the mystery.
