greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I am looking for a recipe for lye soap using lavender color/scent. Does anyone have one they can share? Thank you, tang

I add about 2 cups dried lavender and some lavender oil (depends on the size of the batch) to regular soap. There are tons of recipes somewhere in the archives... I don't have mine handy, but its basically as follows

1 can lye to 1/2 gallon water 78 ounces fat (I use a full tub of shortening, 14 oz. coconut oil and rest olive oil)

For this size recipe, I'd use about 10 - 15 drops of the oil, adding the oil and herbs just before pouring.

There is a really good book out that has several tried and true recipies for soap. The name of the book is "The Natural Soap Book", by Susan Miller Cavitch. Published by Storey Publications. I just finished a batch of soap using one of the recipies. It called for 5- 6 tablespoons of essential oil to scent the soap (added right before you pour into your mold, for a recipe that produced 40, 5oz. bars). The amount of lye, water and oils/fats is apparently very important, along with letting the lye cool to a certain temperature. This book walked me through all the steps and the soap came out perfect. It is not very expensive and is full of very good info.
