I have really enjoyed reading all the responses on my last thread, but it's a little far down now, so thought I'd start a new one. As I said, we don't currently concentrate on being totally self=sufficient, but we do have the materials and knowledge, if we need to be. My husband can do or make or figure out about anything, hunt, fish so together we would be ok.

On the stocking up front, I hit Big Lots (discount close-outs, etc.) today and got some pasta,canned organic tomatoes, spaghetti-type sauce for pasta (I add herbs and jazz it up) or homemade pizza, some herbs, etc. Not alot but a start. How is everyone else doing? Still restless??

Has anyone considered that the urge to stock up might coincide with the beginning of hurricane season or tornado season (depending on where you live)? Those are GOOD reasons to stock up!

On the stocking up issue, I read the first postings and thought this was a good time to add my bit. Although we are not homesteaders we do live in the country and have a small poultry hobby farm. We do though buy when things are 2 for 1, always have. Also I check out the Family Dollar for some things. Spices are sometimes .50 a bottle. Most are comperable to the $3.00 bottles. The shampoo for a dollar has the same things in it as the $4 bottle. Same thing with the laundry soaps, mine never costs more than $3 a gallon and sometimes it's on sale. We hit rummage sales and second hand shops often. With the economy in this country is taking a nosedive and it isn't done yet (in my opinion). Common sence would dictate that one would try to live a bit more frugally. I may be getting a bit off track here but in my opinion this country is basically one of want verses need as opposed to need verses want. Also think this country is one of Beat The Jones's.

Glad to see this thread is still going, its been fun and imformative. I copied the other one off and gave them to some of my neighbors of like concern about the future. I have a dear friend down the road who has been haveing a recuring dream, she is a wonderful christian lady, the dream is that she sits down to table and there is no food. she has prayed about this, and she really feels the lord is telling her to stock up, that there is hard times comeing. When I gave her the copy of the post, she said that it was a confermation that she was asking for. I like can salmon, and my mom had a recipe, for salmon patties that was really good. one can of salmon,1/3 cup chopped onion,1 egg, 5 saltine crackers crushed, 1/2 teas. worcestershire sauce, 1/4 teas. salt, 1/8 teas.pepper, 2 teas. butter. In a bowl, combine the first seven ingredients, mix well. Shape into six patties. In a skillet, fry patties in butter over medium heat,for 3 or 4 min.on each side or until heated through,Yield 3 servings, Sams has canned salmon in a three pack that is quite reasonable. so I will be stocking up on this. any other recipes that go with something your stocking would really be greatly appreciated, help me to do a better job of stocking up . Irene, thanks for the recipe. Mom used to make wonderful salmon patties. We do something similar with tuna. Pour off the liquid and add cracker crumbs and an egg and fry. Even (most of) the children like it.

Here's another thought on the subject. We are used to hearing about how animals use their instincts, but not about how human animals use their's. Could it be that those of us who feel this need are simply more in tune with our preservation instincts than others may be? Perhaps we sense something coming that we cannot yet name that drives us to stock up to get through whatever this future trial may be. I would listen to your instincts.

Coulc it be that we are responding to the news about high gas prices, high electric prices, a possible recession and increased unemployment? As well as floods, tornadoes and fire seasons? I think it is a response to our environment and we must be cautious people re: our home/shelter. Nothing to worry about unless it is taking up too much of your thoughts to the detriment of the rest of your balanced life.
