Oh dale, sorry to hear of you plight. I know that is a very painful process and I hope it happens soon. I think the operative word would be Drink...like lots of fluids. It just has to flush on through. I have heard of various things to drink to prevent getting them, but I think once you are actually passing them there is little to be done. Maybe some of our herbalists could jump in here. Wish I could help you. I will keep you in my prayers. Oh, and take the pain pills as directed whether you think they are working or not. Sometimes it takes a while to get a "theraputic" blood level and it could be doing a lot more than you think it is.

Please check this later today. I'll have something for you then. My husband is sleeping in here (I'm up due to big storm, shutting windows, putting bucket under leaks), and I can't read my info for you by the light of the computer, and first thing AM I need to go to town. But I do have a list of suggestions for you! I'll send it when I get home re: 9:30am central time.

This is from Rosemary Gladstar, mostly. Obviously, you'll need someone else to help you with this. I know how painful it can be...one of my birth clients ended up in the hospital with this during her pregnancy (I'm a homebirth midwife). Good luck!

Kidney Stones

Some known factors that lead to stone formation are:

1.)Comsumption of too much inorganic or insoluble calcium

2.) Poor calcium metabolism

3.) Abnormal function of the parathyroid and thyroid gland upsets calcium absorption and may precipitate the problem.

4.)Excess bed rest due to long term illness leads to the dissolving of bone calcium and its excretion into the urinary system.

THE ABOVE REASONS CONTRIBUTE MAINLY TO CALCIUM PHOSPHATE STONES.

Calcium oxalate stone formation is still unclear. Oxalates are found in many foods: spinach, chard, strawberries, beet greens, wood sorrel and dock leaves. Coffee, chocolate and cocoa do not contain oxalates but do encourage their excretion into the urinare system. It is recommended to avoid foods high in oxalates and foods that irritate the kidneys if prone to stones/gravel.

5.) Urinary stagnatiion can result in stone formation. Kidney stones will only form in a super saturated solution. If the urine becomes too concentrated, to saturated, chemicals in the urine will solidify and become gravel. Low fluid intake, especiallyin warm weather, can be a major factor in stone formation and kidney stone “attacks”. To avoid urine stagnation, adequate fluid intake is essential. Five to six pints or more are recommeneded daily. Drink pure water, herb teas and diluted vegetable and fruit juices. Watermelon juice (include the seeds--they are excellent for the kidneys) is a wonderful seasonal tonic.

6.) Urate stones seem to form with a purine-rich diet; ie, a diet rich in meat, oily food, dairy, alcohol and sweets. Men are more prone toward urate stones than are women. Women are more prone toward cystine stones. Little is known of cystine stones toher than they run in families and suggest a defect of cystine metabolism.

7.) Previous urinary infection is the basic cause of the majority of cases of kidney stones. Therefore, properly treating a urinary infection is imperative in the preventiion of kidney stones.

If prone, avoid stones in the future by paying attention to the above information, drinking plenty of fluids, exercising, eating and drinking lots of dandelion. Simple herbal teas to drink daily for 2-3 months are dandelion, marshmallow, cleavers and chickweed. These will help tone and nourish the kidneys (plus make sure you are drinking enough).

TO DISSOLVE AND AID IN PASSING THE STONES, TRY DR. KLOSS’S OLD TIME TREATMENT. Give a warm enema made with catnip tea, followed by a hot herbal (valerian, hops, lavender blend) bath. Keep the head cool by dipping a washcloth in ice water and wrapping it around the forehead. After the catnip enema and hot herbal bath, dry up and begin placing hot fomentations of hops, lobelia and valerian over the lower back in the area of the kidneys. Alternate hot packs with cold for at least 1/2 hour to 45 minutes. A pourful nervine tincture should be used to relieve the pain, if you have one. For further information, check Kloss’s book, BACK TO EDEN.

I happened on this site a while back and have wanted to try it. Haven't gotten around to it yet, though, and I have no idea if it works, but I thought of it when reading your post. http://www.embassyofheaven.com/catalog/cleanse.htm

Many years ago, while working in a hospital in Missouri, a nurse I worked with was hospitalized with kidney stones. While I was visiting her I was surprised to find her drinking a beer. She said it was the best thing to drink to pass the stone. I'm not sure if it was due to the beer itself, or the fact that beer induces faster urine formation by inhibiting anti-diuretic hormone. But she swore by it. Now, I would not advise drinking any beer if you are taking pain medication.

gatorade helped me when I had one,, still hurt,, but I guess it helped,, DR told me to dont stop drinking it till it hurt,, was drinking with one hand,, peeing with the other

I too had a nurse friend who swore that beer helped with her kidney stones. She told me she would get a 6-12? pack and get drunk in the bathtub. She said it would help it pass and the amount made the pain bearable and the tub was so she wouldn't have to keep getting up (if you catch my drift). So if you are not opposed to it, drink up.

Hope it passes soon and, remember, this is the closest thing you get to labor.

Had them last year and thought I was dying for several days. They finally passed the day I went to the doctor. He told me to keep a 6-pack of beer handy because they usually recur. He said to drink them one after the other(at least 4 of them.) I would probably die from having to drink the beer. His preferance was Bud Light. Faye.

Hi dale, There are several herbs out there that can help you and support your body through this process. What you want to do I think is work on dissolving them because it can be very painful to expediate the body's natural slow passing. Please keep this in mind! One herb that I can think of of the top of my head is called Gravel Root, you could check into. Kind Regards.

My husband just went through this a couple weeks ago. His doctor recommended drinking lemonade (the real stuff, not the powdered version). He recommended against drinking cranberry juice (which was recommended in the past) saying it actually makes matters worse. As a note of interest, my husband had his problem with kidney stones a month after he stopped drinking coffee. I don't think drinking coffee will prevent stones, but I do believe not drinking enough in a day will cause stones. He stopped drinking coffee, but didn't start drinking water or anything else as much as he had the coffee. Now he is drinking a lot more water and no coffee. We are hoping that he won't have any repeat performances with the kidney stones, and his stomach is certainly alot happier without all the caffeine from the coffee!
