Water shortage hits city's northeast side
A water shortage threatens northeast Tucson this summer.
More than 500 customers had no water for hours on June 2 and 4.
Utility officials said the problems could reappear in the next few months because there's not enough storage for the 1,600-person service area. While plans are under way to build a bigger tank, it won't be complete before the end of the summer.
Metro Water, which serves about 45,000 customers on Tucson's northwest side, bought the service area from the private Hub Water Co. in 1998.
Metro Water inherited an aging system with faulty mains and a 186,000-gallon storage tank, said Warren Tenney, assistant to the general manager.
