propane refridgerator problems

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Does anyone have propane refridgerator knowledge that they are willing to share? O.K. its in a motorcoach/home parked at the back of an orange grove on 800 acres of dieing grove due to the lack of water, here in the middle of the desert of central Florida. This thing won't light and I,m blowing my budget on trips to get ice.

wiull it NOT light at all,, or wdoes it go out quickly? If not at all,, check to make sure propane is coming thru. If it goes out alot,, check the nozzle,, I had mine doing that,, and it had a "goober",, some built up carbon I think, on the end of it making it go out

Definely check the orifice on the burner. It is quite common for them to oxidize shut. Also check the gas supply, make sure all valves are open and that your regulator is functioning properly. Usually you can just loosen a flare nut and listen for gas flow but if you want to get fancy and check it with a manometer you want 7" to 11" water column pressure. If you get the burner going and it doesn't cool, an old trick that works pretty good is to turn the refrigerator up side down for a day or two and shake it around a little too. Be sure and put it right side up before trying to start it again. Good luck.

If it burns OK while the "Pull to Light" knob (or whatever your's has) is out, but goes out as soon as you release it, the safety shutoff is messed up. The two units I have both have a heat-to-pressure gizmo that runs from the flame to a gas shut-off valve. Try to reposition the end of this gizmo so that the flame hits more of it. If this doesn't work, it should be easy to replace. The same unit was probably used on many gas appliances, not just the fridges.

There is a couple of things I need to add to the original question, the first being that I am mobility impaired, I can reach the control panel at the bottom front of the unit but have no way to get back up if I go to the floor. I cannot tell if the sparker is working. There is an access panel on the outside of the motorcoach, much easier to get to, can I light it from there? If so, can someone list the instructions in a step by step version, (that is the retarded dumb blond version)? And before you send mail bombs remember we blonds must speak to brunettes and redheads in a version that they can understand!!

you ownt be able to light it from the access panel. CAn you get someone to check it with you. Check for propane flowing,, (from the access panel),, and check for spark,,

The fridge can be lit from the access panel. You will have to remove the flame cover located on the bottom right, looking at the back.A couple of phillips screws and you will see the burner. You have to hold down the pilot button and hold it down untill the flame stays burning. Sounds like you could use some help to get set up . In the mean time try to buy block ice. If the store dosen't have it ask them to order it for you. also get used to less cold food ,Pretend you live in Mexico ,drink agua normal. good luck wayne
