Garlic??

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Beyond the Sidewalks : One Thread

The garlic I have in my garden is sooo good. My question what's the name of it. You see this garlic around old homeplaces. It grows a huge bulb some five inchs across. It has a hard stem and is white. When you pull it there's little tan baby garlic cloves hanging on the sides, some of these stay in the ground and it plants it's self for next year. It is very mild. Thanks

Not an expert on garlic, Sherry, but I have heard that the really large, mild garlic is called elephant garlic. Also have heard that it is EXCELLENT roasted until soft and then spread on bread (or on potatoes, I bet!). Hope someone else can tell you for certain.

Sherry, I'm not being a smart alec or anything, we just call that garlic wild garlic. My dad has some at his 100+ year old homestead in the Ozarks! We love it too. Kim

I've seen it in places that it was so thick it looked wild but it's not really wild there is wild garlic but because of these little baby cloves it really gets thick when left unattended. I made pesto yesterday with some and it was yum. I've heard it called elephant garlic to but I don't think elephant garlic has the babies that replant it's self. Hey and I'm not trying to be a smart alec either it just come natural..He He :) Thanks Sherry

Sherry and kim-I have some growing that I got off of my neighbor here,as well. They found it growing at an old abandoned homesite down on the river. It's leaves look just like my elephant garlic, only a little smaller plant.I haven't dug any yet so I have no idea on the 'bulblets'.I'm having to assume it was the original garlic that elephant was developed from, elephant being an improved variety.I'm calling mine riverbottom garlic for lack of a better name.

Sherry, It sure sounds like elephant garlic to me,I raise it here. The little garlic buds take two years to turn in to huge bulbs. When you pull the garlic if you find some round bulbs about an inch across, replant them and in the spring you will have huge cloves of elephant garlic. The farm stores around here pays $6.00 a pound for the rounds to use as seed. It is not really a garlic but a leek. You can roast them and eat them as they are very mild. My favorite,Daryll

Well I guess it's elephant garlic, I sent a email decribing it to a garlic web site and they said they thought it to be elephant. Thanks for your responses and everyone please have a good weekend.Sherry
