Yorkshire pig breed

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

We want to get a few pigs to till up a pasture.

The only ones I have found in my area are Yorkshire. Will they work well for foraging, etc? We also want a good tasting, lean meat.

Thanks. Amy

All breeds are good foragers, just some are better than others. Tamsworth comes to mind. Have had a few Yorkshire and YorkX sows. All would root extensively if the did not have rings in the nose. Some would still root with the rings. Even pigs on pasture should be supplemented for optimal growth. With the exercise they get in the pasture, they should not gain excessive fat. They are an excellent hog to eat and are known for their mothering ability. Give them a try. Don't expect small pigs to do the job that full grown hogs will. Good luck.

Hi Amy. I've raised yorkshires before and I think they are the best when it comes to leanness. They will root and do everything else the other pigs will do. But what I like best about them is since they are a little longer bodied than most other pigs, You get few extra pork chops when you have them processed. Yum,Yum.

Vijay, it sounds like you got a diseased batch of pigs. Bummer. Maybe you can get your money back...threaten to call the Agriculture Dept in to inspect whatever farm it was you got them from.

Meanwhile, I would like to apologize for Cody's post. English spelling is arbitrary & difficult, and typos are a sign of a mind too quick for the fingers, but poor grammar and lazy punctuation such as Cody's only serve to accentuate his ignorant redneck rudeness.
