Posion Ivy! Help me!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Beyond the Sidewalks : One Thread

I know, I know. If you get poison ivy, stay out of the woods. But I just can't help it, the woods are so pretty right now. And now I have poison ivy on every appendage (at least it's not on my face like it was in the 5th grade, like 5th grade isn't bad enough!). I've been practically hosing myself down with calamine lotion, but it still itches so bad! Anybody have any suggestions? I've been so good and haven't scratched at all, but it's so hard not too! Please help soon (before I start using pine trees as back scratchers!)

Take a dry washclothe and alcohol and scrub them till the little tops come off. It will go away. Every time one itches, scrub it hard. It really works. Really it does. For real.

There's about 8 zillion suggestions on several poison ivy threads over at CS. You might want to check the archives (older questions). I think vinegar was one. Personally, I've never had poison ivy, but my inclination would be to use lavender essential oil in some witchhazel. But then, I think lavender is good for just about everything that ails you . . .

I had got it two weeks ago and did not know what it was. The doctor gave me a shot of somthing and it made it stop itching and it went away in a couple of days.

This works. Mix together two parts of activated charcoal to one each of black walnut and echinacea. Wet with enough water to make a paste and apply to patches. Moisten papertowel and place over paste to keep it damp. Change after 10 minutes. Do this several times a day and it will dry up and disappear with no scaring. You can use just the activated charcoal if you want (get at healthfood store, don't know if wally world sells it) but it will be harder to get clean when you rinse it off. I used this on my son who had it all over his face and everyone one in school thought he had a shot at the doctors because it cleared up so fast.

Baking soda paste.Used for many generations in my family.Dries up blisters as well as relieves itching. When all else fails.

Jewelweed juice also.

Both traditional,both very effective.

Mix together a half and half mixture of cider vinegar and rubbing alcohol, apply liberally four, or more, times a day. Relieves the itching and dries the pustules quite quickly. Acetic acid (vinegar) is the main ingrediant in "ivy dry type store bought preparations", so make your own and save some money!

Also good for insect stings to relieve the pain and swelling.

Jewel Weed, Jewel Weed , Jewel Weed, the answer to poison ivy is Jewel Weed. I pull up poison ivy with my bare hands then rub Jewel weed on my skin , and never break out. Jewel Weed will take care of poison ivy rash that has allready started allso. I just can't believe that more people don't know about Jewel Weed. I soppose they don't want people to know so's that they will go to the Dr. and spend money on medicine.! Elizabeth, if you don't know what Jewel Weed looks like search around untill someone can show you. It usually grows down by the creek beds and in wet spots. It will have yellow or orange droppy flowers. Jewel Weed is Gods answer to poison ivy and the sting of Stinging Nettle. I have transplanted some to my yard, and if I don't let it dry out it does well. But it seems to grow everywhere. Once my neighbors brought their little grandboy to see me because they had heard that I had a cure for poison ivy. We walked down to the creek bed so that I could show them the healing plant, I showed them how to break the stem open and we rubbed the inner juice on the poor little boy, he had immediate relief and his rash was healing up the next morning. There is no need to fear poison ivy when we have Jewel Weed.If I can be of any more help, contact me. Tren

Actually, I've seen quite a lot of jewel weed. Last summer I ground a bunch up and froze it in ice cube trays for just such an occasion, but it's all used now, I guess I'll have to hazard another trip into the wood to get more!

Elizabeth,

Sterile cotten balls and ammonia will do the trick for the itch and the blisters overnight. (Really- and I'm a serious sufferer) Dampen the cotten ball and rub it hard (until it burns) on the poison ivy. The ammonia both neutralizes the oil and prevents it's returning of rash. My eaglescout honey taught me that one, thank goodness.

Hi Everybody! wow, I am printing this page off, so's I can remember all these tricks, just in case there is not any jewle weed around someday!

Sharon, I was especially interested in the traditional cure of baking soda for poison ivy, I had never heard that one, but a 100yr old lady in Missouri, told me to put baking soda moistened with alchohol on a bee or wasp sting, it works like magic! Draws the sting right out! I have silenced many a childs screaming, and a few times my own pain , with that.

We need to share more of these old tricks, why depend on expensive medicines when the cure usually grows as a weed, if allowed, at our back door.
