Call for co-moderators

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Beyond the Sidewalks : One Thread

I posted the following on another thread but then thought it should have a thread of it's own so you wouldn't miss it:

I've been thinking lately that I may need to ask for volunteers to co-moderate the forum with me. We've had over 4000 posts to this forum since April 1st, 2001 (and we're not even three months old yet!). We've been rocketing up the "active forums" list and we're starting to catch up to other forums here on Greenspun that have been around a LOT longer than us. With the steady stream of newcomers, I think it's gonna get to the point real soon where I won't be able to manage this forum alone - especially if we have trolls start popping in here to cause trouble.

I'm thinking one or two people could co-moderate the forum with me. With two or three of us doing the job there shouldn't be much work in managing the forum. Co-moderators would have full access rights to the password-protected administrative section and could help me deal with troublemakers (by deleting their posts) as well as a few of the other moderator duties such as creating new thread categories, making sure newbies are welcomed and aware of the rules of the forum, etc.

That's about all I'm gonna say on this for now as I don't have a lot of time today to devote to this train of thought. If any of you forum regulars are interested in becoming a co-moderator please send me an email (or post it here) and we'll go from there...

I don't know the first thing about moderating a forum, passwords, etc etc, nor do I post often enough to be qualified, but I thought I'd tell you it sounds like a wonderful idea!! These things can become a full-time job!! If you don't get any takers, I'm online about once a week these days, but willing to help out -

I'm willing to help out, but you'll have to explain the cybergeek stuff to me in words of one syllable or less. :-)

I'm going to be off-line all weekend for my first camping trip since Jr High. See you all when I get back.

I'm willing to help too, I think. I know nothing about how these forums work behind the scenes, but I'm a quick learner. Of course, if there are any really skilled at this sort of thing that are just panting to help out, I'll defer to them.

[I fear to ask how many of those 4000+ posts are mine! :-O ]

I would be happy to be of help if needed. I never really thought about just how much time this is costing you Jim....I think you are doing a nice job and it is appreciated.

I'll help if ya need it too. I know quite a bit about the internet. I have to upload a lot for my site and others, FTP and all that. We don't want you working too hard! Of course, you're still the boss!

A big thank you to all of you for offering to help!

And even though I won't need each and every one of you to take up co- moderating, I'll contact each one of you by email in the next few days to let you know where we're ultimately heading with this.

Thanks again.
