Alltel Outage Blamed on ‘Software Glitch’

By Arkansas Business staff Arkansas Business - 6/20/01 3:19:26 PM

Alltel Corp. of Little Rock is investigating a “software glitch” that caused its cell phone users to go without service for three hours Wednesday.

Alltel Corp. said it didn’t know what caused the switch on its west campus at Interstate 430 and Rodney Parham to go out, shutting down the Little Rock market from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., said Alltel spokesman Andrew Moreau.

The Little Rock market extends roughly from Hot Springs in the west, north to Russellville and east to Jonesboro, Paragould and Helena.

“Any customer in that area who was trying to use his phone would have been affected,” Moreau said.

Moreau said there was no way to tell how many people might have tried to use their Alltel cell phones during that period, nor does the company release the number of customers it has in a given market.
