Sexing Bunnies

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Freedom! self reliance : One Thread

I am trying to tell whether my bunnies are XX or XY and those little buggers are tough to determine. I am trying the old pencil with the string method when it is completely unclear to me and on some of them it just sits and does nothing...or does line, circle and line again, remaining completely unclear. Does anyone have any suggestions for me? I intended to head to Wally World parking lot and entrance little kids with bunnies and make their parents buy them, but I need to know what sex they are before I can do this. Thanks for any help you can give me!

This is difficult with very young rabbits, How old are yours? You should be able to see the testicles before they are too old. It is also possible to make the males penis protrude by gently pulling back on the bunnies tail and pushing in just in front of the furry pad from which they urinate. Good luck. We used to sell bunnies and I'm sure we mis sexed plenty. Always told the buyers we weren't too good at it but gave them our best guess. Kim

Mine are 8 and 10 weeks old. The older males...sexed by the pencil method successfully, have these itty bitty little liver colored testes starting out. Is that right? I must have been doing the pulling back of the hair incorrectly some of the time as on two of the males, I couldn't find any sign of a penis. thanks for your help, Kim!

My pastor's wife taught me how to sex the bunnies. Turn them over and tickle their privates, then press open. This has worked 100% for me. All our litters were accidents and we've had no more bunnies since then. I don't want anymore either since I sent the kids to play elsewhere while I did this and my husband called me a bunny molester.

My dogs won't be concerned in the least! I will give the tickle a try...did they prefer a light tickle or a rough tickle?..I think i'll try the light one and let you know. Thanks for the info and the smile.

I would like to know how I can tell the difference between males and female rabbits? about 5 weeks ago my netherland dwarf rabbit Muffy had 5 babies. They are now seperated from her and I have a Holland Lop in with them. She is older by about 9 weeks or so, and I named her Nala. Last night she was trying to breed them, so I told my mom that I would breed her tomorrow BUT...this morning I checked to see if she was ready and I got a BIG surprise...she was a boy!!!! So I would like to know how to tell 5 week-old Dwarf rabbits appart?
