HONG KONG (June 24, 2001 11:30 p.m. EDT) - A magnitude 5.7 earthquake shook the Kuril Islands off Russia's Pacific coast, Hong Kong's earthquake observatory said in a statement Monday.

The quake hit at 9:26 p.m. Hong Kong time (9:26 a.m. EDT) Sunday and was centered about 60 miles south-southeast of the town of Kurilsk, the Hong Kong Observatory said.

It had no information on damage from the quake.

The Kuril Islands are located along the "Ring of Fire," one of the world's most earthquake-prone regions.

The four southernmost islands in the chain are claimed by both Russia and Japan in a dispute that has prevented the countries from signing a treaty formally ending World War II.
