Orthodox and Roman Catholicism

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Catholic : One Thread

Would someone kindly explain all of this to me? I've been reading about Pope John Paul's trip to Ukraine and I don't understand all of the protests. From a caption on one picture: An Ukrainian Orthodox worshipper holds an icon of the Holy Virgin with Christ during a protest against Pope John Paul II's visit to Ukraine at the Monastery of the Caves in Ukraine's capital Kiev, on Sunday, June 24, 2001.

Why would you hold up a picture of Mary and Jesus to protest the Pope???? What's the difference between Orthodox and Roman? Are they both Catholic? Who is the head of the Orthodox church then? Why the friction there?

Thanks!

a very short but concise response to your question: in most cases it is uncomprising political differences going back many years. according to news reports eminating from russia, pope john-paul ii, is trying to find some common ground to bring communion between the affected parties. i wish him success. pax domini. juan

Jackiea,

Please scroll down the main page of lusenet and read the posts under the heading "Can't decide - Orthodox or Roman Catholicism (Sean, 2001- 06-04)". Lots of discussion there.
