Gene Logsdon is gonna be at our local library!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Beyond the Sidewalks : One Thread

Wow! I just found out that Gene Logsdon is going to be at our local librairy selling and signing books. I doubt if we will be buying any books because we allready have them all!. We are so excited , My Jim just loves Gene and has read his books over and over. We listened to Gene Logsdon recently on the Don and Carla show, he sounded younger and more playful then in his books. It will be so cool to meet him!

In case anybody doesn't know who he is, he writes about homesteading and farming, some of his most popular books being, Two Acre Eden, You can go home again, and Homesteading, How to find New Independence on the Land.

I can't believe that we get to meet him, wish that I could invite him to supper, Jim would like to(,to use one of Gene's phrases)" hunckle down "out in the garden with him.! Tren

Response to Gene Logsdon is gonna be at our local librairy!

Awww man - I am SO jealous! Invite ME over for supper - I want to go meet Gene too ;o)

I love his books too. I think I like them mostly for the light- hearted manner in which he writes. He manages to poke fun without hurting feelings and you'd love to drop by and have a beer in the garden with some of his characters. But, when he has a point to make, he is straight forward and doesn't pull his punches. Somewhere out on the web, there is the "totally unauthorized Gene Logdon fan club web site" I keep stumbling over it by accident.

When will he be there?

Okay, where do you live again? I have to check the plane schedules . . . Okay, seriously, I'm just jealous too! Maybe you can find out where else he's going to be signing books, so we can all see if he's going to be anywhere near us!

O.K. come on over everybody, we are out side of Lancaster Ohio, Yah, I guess Gene LOgsdon lives up by Sandusky way, so its about a two hr. drive for him to get here. They are having him for the opening reception of a Learning From the Prairie program for kids. Don't know how many of his fans will find out about it as it doesn't seem to be too heavily advertised and if I hadn't been reading the library bullention I wouldn't have known. Dianne you live in Ohio don't you? You probably could come! It will be July 7th from 1-4. Thanks everybody for sharing the joy with me. Polly don't I remember your favorite book of his was the "Critters in the back yard" one? Hey Di, what cha bringing for supper? Love TRen

Wow- wish I could stop by. Went to bed last night reading his Contrary Farmer's Invitiation to Gardening. Excellent book, as are all of his.

-- Anonymous, June 27, 2001

I would love to see Gene Logsdon too. I have read almost all of his books and I live in Ohio too but not close to Lancaster. Oh well, tell us all about it!

-- Anonymous, June 27, 2001

Well, if I'm not working by then - or if they hire me and I can get them to PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let me have a couple days off - I would love to see him. And maybe get him to autograph my copy of Small Scale Grain Raising. How far is Lancaster from Sydney? My dad lives in Sydney. It's 10 hours from here to there and I can JUST BARELY make it in one fell swoop if I catnap along the way.

Sojourner, I got out my Ohio Map, Hm can;t fine the town that you speak of I found a Snyder, could that be it?

-- Anonymous, June 28, 2001

Why not take your oft-used books for him to sign? You bought them at some point anyway. If he's as down to earth as he seems, he would probably be honored to sign even those.

-- Anonymous, June 28, 2001

This has been educational! I have never even heard of this guy! (Except I think I looked at the Small Scale Grain Raising book around Y2k time.) But then, I'm just an intellectual peasant!

Have fun at the book signing!

Nope, its Sydney. Or maybe Sidney. Probably spelled with an "i" not a "y". It's just north of 70 on 75.

My maps are buried somewhere deep and deep ... LOL!

A homesteader ...  Not ... heard of ... GENE LOGSDON ????

You SHOULD be sheepish, sheepish!  (just kidding!)

-- Anonymous, June 28, 2001

Sojourner... you mean Sidney, in Shelby county, Ohio... tho I'm in Wisconsin now... my inlaws live in Shelby county... and I have shopped in Sidney plenty of times...as I too lived in Shelby county for a while.. a long time ago

where are you from??? isn't Lancaster north of Columbus???

-- Anonymous, June 28, 2001

I hadn't heard of him either. Guess I have some more books to put on reserve at the library! :-)

When I first got my library card they said that I could only check out 25 books at a time. I just laughed. Little did I know that I'd be pushing the limit on more than one occasion!

-- Anonymous, June 28, 2001

Yarrow - Yup, that's the Sidney I mean. My dad moved there after he married my stepmom. She's lived there all her life.

I'm originally from Fairborn, or Squareborn as it is not so affectionately known. I once met a guy in Puerto Rico who had lived there for awhile while he was in the Air Force. He looked at me and said, "YOU'RE from FAIRBORN? That's impossible! Being in Fairborn was like walking back into the '50s - NO, the FORTIES!"

Yes, it always has been a little bit reactionary ... LOL!

Hey, I wonder if that means they'll be going through a Flower Child period here in about 10 years or so ... LOL! The '60s come late to Fairborn Ohio ...

I'm not sure where Lancaster is. I'm guessing its Northish, and I know Gene Logsdon lives in Northern Ohio somewhere.

And Sherri - your library lets you check out TWENTY FIVE BOOKS AT ONE TIME????? They only let me have 4 at a time here! So I get 4 on my card and 4 on my son's card. And the library is 20 miles from here so I don't go as often as I'd like to.

Some folks have all the luck ...

Yes, I come by the name honestly. If not a double entendre, then at least a triple for the moniker! That's why I love it! BAAAA

I've been lurking for quite a while but had to comment about Gene coming to Lancaster. You are so lucky!! I'm from Lancaster myself and am even planning a visit back later this summer. I could kick myself, I would love to meet Gene and get him to sign just one of my books. I still miss Fairfield County, it was a beautiful area to live in. I lived out on Chicken Coop Hill Road, not too far from Sugar Grove. Enjoy your self for everyone!!

-- Anonymous, June 29, 2001

Hey Jackie,.............quit lurking and jump on in!!! Welcome aboard, why don't you sign in and tell us a little about yourself so we can get to know you???

-- Anonymous, June 29, 2001

Jakie, Yah!, wow!, what state did you move to? I can't believe you were so close to me. I have been on chicken Coop Hill Rd. lots of times, go that aways to my Moms. My oldest daughter goes to school at Sugar Grove! How long did you live in this area? You loved it so, why did you have to leave? JOb related? You have probably been right past my house! but we have only been here about 4 yrs. Tell me more! Tren

-- Anonymous, June 29, 2001

Yarrow, Lancaster is SouthEast of Columbus about 45-50 miles. Just go towards the Hills! Oh by the way Yarrow, you are blooming in my gardens and you are so beautiful in all your different shades of pink, peach and ivory!

Marilyn- good idea, we Will take our old books.

Ah Sheepish, you will have to read some of his!

Sojourner, thanks for the fan club link!

I got the job and they're going to let me start the 9th instead of the 2nd, so I get to go see Gene Logsdon! According to Mapquest its about 130 miles from Sidney, roughly a 2 hour drive. Plenty of time to get there and get back and still get a good nights sleep before heading back to Ohio on Sunday.

Trendle, you say you have all of Gene's books - do you have "Last Days of a Farmer"? I've been looking for that book for no kidding FIVE YEARS without ever seeing hide nor hair of it. Can't even get a copy via interlibrary loan.

And can you tell me how to find the library once I get there?

-- Anonymous, June 29, 2001

Trendle, My family and I moved in '86 to Florida. It was job related. My DH lost his job with Anchor Hocking and at that time there was not alot of other jobs around. But we still have tons of family in Lancaster so we get back every couple years. I do miss Fairfield County, the people are great and the area is so pretty. Maybe someday I'll get to move back. Our house on Chickencoop Hill was the one at the top of the hill across from the little church. Enjoy getting the meet Gene. Jackie

-- Anonymous, June 29, 2001

Sojourner, Well I guess that we don't have all of Gene's books, as I don't reconize that one! sounds interesting! Maybe you can ask him about it! I'll e-mail you the directions.

Jackie-I will look for your old house next time that I travel chicken coup. I know the church. wonder if you were born and raised in this area. I moved here from Mo. and I sure thought that people were different, more reserved then the folk that I was used to. I think there are some really great people here but they just don't have the openess that I was used to. It took me awhile to figure out that I was frightening people with my straighforwardness. I learned that you just don't start talking to strangers as much here as you could do out in Mo.

-- Anonymous, June 29, 2001

Trendle, that's too funny! You moved to Ohio from Missouri and I was raised in Ohio but now live in Missouri.

I like it here because it seems so much like where I grew up in Ohio, which isn't like that anymore. I always thought people were pretty friendly and it seemed the same here, but I am from the south western part of the state, I guess its just a regional difference.

-- Anonymous, June 30, 2001

BTW, do you know which books he's promoting? I know he's got 2 or 3 new titles out. "Good Spirits", which I already have, and "Wildlife in the Garden", an updated version of a previous title.. The one on aquaculture is still a work in progress last I heard.

-- Anonymous, June 30, 2001

Sojourner, I have no idea which books he will be promoting. What part of Missouri are you in? I'm not sure if you meant that you were in southwestern Ohio or thats where you were in Mo. I love Missouri, so wild and free! I lived on Lake Pomme De Terre in southeren Missouri,The old folks out there all called it Missoura..

Isn't it funny that the further south you go, the friendlier people are? Call a clerk in any office up north and she will be cool, crisp and to the point, call one in the south and she will be warm, friendly and helpful. Has any one else noticed this or am I crazy?

I grew up in SW Ohio, where folks were (back then) friendly enough, I thought. But its not like that there anymore, its all suburbaned-over. The farms are mostly gone, paved and developed with ticky tacky crackerboxes 30' apart (or less).

NOW I'm in South Central Missouri, Douglas County (or Booger County so I am told). One county further South and I'd be on the Arkansas border.

Friendliness? I think its a small town thing rather than a specifically regional thing. Well probably some of both. I lived an interminable year and a half in a southern state I won't name and suffered every day of it. Some folks were friendly enough but most of them didn't seem to have been born there. The rest viewed me with narrow-eyed suspicion, especially when I didn't show up at their particular church in a "reasonable" amount of time.

I definitely haven't had any problem here. Small town, but not nosy. Folks are friendly but they don't pry and if you don't volunteer information they by and large don't speculate. I'm told 30 years ago it was not quite so open, but it seems fine now. Things change - that's why I'm here instead of in Ohio. LOL!

When I first got here, I asked folks who had lived here all their lives whether they considered Missouri to be Midwestern or Southern. Every single one of them told me neither - Missouri is the HEARTLAND! LOL!

Oh Tren, maybe you don't WANT to know this . . . . Do you know how Lake Pomme du Terre translates (actually, it should be Lac Pomme du Terre)? It's Potato Lake! Pomme du Terre = Potato (well, literally, apple of the earth, but that means a potato in French). Sounds better in French, doesn't it!

-- Anonymous, June 30, 2001

Joy, well I did know this, and it's O.K. by me. Apple of the earth does sound nicer then potatoe tho. doesn't it! Lake Pomme De Terre is a very beautiful lake. I do miss it, as I used to live right on it for some time. I knew all these secret little spots that you could go to and be all alone. I worked at a marina that floated on the lake. During a storm we would sway around and I always found that exciting. Once when there was alot of rain, we had to get to the marina on boats.Oh I could write a book about the times and people that I knew there! But I am rambling arn't I! Tren

Trendle, No, I wasn't born in Ohio. I was born in western PA. But I married a Lancaster native and that seemed to make a difference for some reason. We are always running into folks that he knows, anytime that we are up for a visit. And I think he's related to most of the Miller's in town. Please give details about Gene's visit. I know that I am dying to hear about it. Jackie
