Differences in HTML code and how it can affect your browser

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Beyond the Sidewalks : One Thread

Just wanted to show everyone the differences in Earthmama's HTML code ("A very brief course in some basic HTML" thread) and what I eventually modified it to. I thought you might be especially interested in this, Cindy, as her code gave you such a case of the dizzies... ;-)

Here is the original code as Earthmama posted it on June 26th:

<font size=4><font color=purple><B><I><marquee>BEYOND THE SIDEWALKS ROCKS!!</font size></font color></B></I></marquee>

And here is the code after I made modifications to it later that same evening:

<font size=4 color=purple><B><I><marquee>BEYOND THE SIDEWALKS ROCKS!!</marquee></font></B></I>

And finally, I altered her code a bit more today (June 29th) and this modification also works:

<font size=4 color=purple><B><I><marquee>BEYOND THE SIDEWALKS ROCKS!!</marquee></I></B></font>

But do we know why??

I remember when a similar thing happened on CS. Someone poste something in italics and the whole thread continued in italics for ever. Ken tried to fix it and couldnt.

Looks like just from observing the difference that my first worked but the others didnt, in both cases after it was changed .

???

The only thing I can see is that maybe since the first one had "size" and "color" AFTER the "Beyond the Sidewalks Rocks", it why it changed the whole page.

I first copied the code and then pasted it to my notepad, then I took off everything after "BTSR", and replaced it with < /font>, to make it stop right there. That is when the whole page down started doing the marquee! It really was cool, all the posts were just marching right along! Did you see it Earthmama? I changed it back, but I don't know how many people saw it before I did.

Looks like it has to be a mirror of the commands in the front of the words, without "size" or "color". In other HTML it's just the < /font> that is in the end. The color and size must have took it on down to the next threads.

Thanks Jim. And Earthmama, you do have power! I was giggling so hard I could hardly type. Just tell me I'm not the only one who saw it!

I'm sorry Cindy, I cannot comply with your request, even if you are a big cheese here now. I cannot tell you that you were not the only one.......

I put a spell on you.....tried to make you dizzy and giggly. It worked too! I shall be trying more spells in the future; I need lots of practice for dealing with my new neighbors in the burbs.......

I am spooky.........

Hey Earthmama, you and I must be related...

Here are a couple pictures of me - the similarities are striking, wouldn't you agree? ;-)

(this is an early picture of me)

(this one was taken after I had gained quite a bit of weight...I changed color, too...)

(In this picture I was quite angry - possibly because I didn't want my weight gain documented on film. I get really red when I'm angry...)

Wow that IS amazing, Jimmy! Well ya know we are both from Minnesota, I spose we have our share of inbreds around here; course not as many as in Kentucky......

Gee Jim, that last pic of you sure shows how you pitch a fit dosen't it! If you look close at the little guy, it actually looks like a case of bad gas!

And that's ok Emama, I like Kentucky jokes too! I actually know a couple who are cousins, and the pastor married them.
