Another EarthBox site & potato barrel idea

Well, that title says it all. But here is the page address for a guy making his own that I thought you might like -- http://earthboxes.50megs.com/

Found this idea for potato barrels while surfing around, and thought that I would share it. I found a pail of spuds in the garage I'd forgotten about that were sprouting big time and have started up my own barrel --

Thanks for the link to the homemade earthboxes, julie! I may have to build a couple of these things over the winter months and give them a try next year - especially for things like lettuces and such.

With last summer being so cool, the only vine-ripe tomatoes I got were the ones in the Earth Boxes that I hauled into the hoop house when the weather turned really cold. It created a warm enough microclimate to finish them out and they were great. I grew Patio and Sweet 100 in them and both were producing fruit when the ones in the ground didn't. Herbs have done well in them for me too, as well as greens. Haven't tried root crops or corn in them to make a judgement.

I wish I'd found the potato barrel idea earlier to start at the beginning of the season and see if the yield was anything like they claimed it could be. It sure would save me a lot of garden space to grow them vertically in barrels and free up the raised beds for other crops.
