Scientists aim to find if blondes do have more fun

Chris Marks

A TEAM of scientists trying to discover if blondes really do have more fun today appealed for more volunteers to help their research.

Experts at the University of Edinburgh used today’s National Blonde Day in the US to highlight their study into the genetics of blonde hair.

The team, which is led by Professor Jonathan Rees, an expert in dermatology, who has completed extensive research into red hair, wants blonde men and women to take part in research.

They are trying to discover why there are differences in human hair colour, and why people’s skin responds differently to sunshine, depending on hair colour.

They also want to know what advantages, if any, there might be to having blonde hair.

Prof Rees said: "For all the jokes about dumb blondes, we are very ignorant of its genetics and we don’t understand why some people are blond and others are not.

"We are curious as to why blond hair developed in northern Europe and nowhere else in the world, and we also want to understand why it is inherited in families.

"To do this, we need to collect people who have blond hair in early adult life, look at hair colour and study the hair colour of their families."

Prof Rees wants to find out how much more susceptible to sunburn blondes are and to put together "descriptive data of what happens to people with blonde hair".

He is looking for people of all ages to help with the two-year project.

Their hair would be photographed and studied by the team who are particularly keen to find volunteers whose brothers and sisters or parents also have blonde hair.

They are also looking for people who live in Edinburgh or close to the city and who would be willing to travel to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary or the University of Edinburgh to be studied.

National Blonde Day is being celebrated in the US today with festivals, speeches and demonstrations organised by the group Blonde Legal Defence Club.

Its mission is to stop the widespread belief that blondes are dumb and it was set up in response to prejudice against blonde lawyers.

Dr Rees’s earlier research concluded redheads have greater sex appeal than fair-haired people. He suggested natural selection may be one of the reasons for the large number of Scottish redheads, with our ancestors having a preference for sexual partners with red hair.

No more free lap dances for you, Gordon.

-- Anonymous, July 10, 2001

Lap dances? What are lap dances? Wait a minute, let me guess. Is it like a square dance, but (not butt) done in a circular motion, clockwise or counterclockwise, counting the laps off? Or, maybe it's one of those wild dances done during celebration time in Lapland. Sheesh, too many options!

-- Anonymous, July 10, 2001

There may be too many options, but a lap dance is one option you don't have anymore.

LOL

Awww, shucks. I know I have a bad habit of shooting myself in the foot. Looks like I shot myself in the lap this time. Hope I recover.
