Eating mold

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Beyond the Sidewalks : One Thread

4 days ago I ate a bite of badly moldy cake. Only one bite. Okay its not something I normally do but the kitchen was dark and I was sneeking the bite from Barb's plate! Dang she never finishes anything and it drives me crazy. Anyway my throat was badly swollen and that thing a ma bob in the back of my throat was twice its size. I'm better now but has this ever happened to anyone else? Do you think I'm allergic to mold or is this a normal thing for anyone who sneeks moldy cake? Also for a while it was a little hard to breath.....Kirk

Hm. Do you also have a penicillin allergy? I've accidentally made up sandwiches with bread that I didn't notice was moldy on the bottom and never had that kind of a reaction. My brother is very allergic to penicillin, and some bread molds are what penicillin is derived from, so perhaps that is what caused your reaction???

Kirk Yes,I do. Call me when you can. Long list.

Kirk, I suspect you are allergic to cake, sweet things, ice cream, chocolate, dessert materials of any kind. Maybe cut them out for, say, 10 years and see if it makes a difference. Molds have rights too - this might be a bad rap. Hope this helps (heehee).

Sorry, Kirk, that you got sick. Perhaps it WAS the sneaky behavior that caused you to get sick. :-P

David, shame on you for making fun of someone with allergies! [Did I do a good enough imitation of a humorless p.c. fascist?] You are too funny!

I did that once with a Little Debbie's chocolate swirle thing, comes individualy wrapped. Steve was pumping the gas, and I spotted it in the van, said OH YEAH, unwrapped it, took a bite and then spit it out against the windshield with horrific force. It wasn't pretty. I think I spit out all the mold, but I was afraid I would get sick for a while, but I didn't. I am allergic to penicillin. And I've also heard you don't ever want to breath in mold into your nose by accident.

My old room mate / landlord from back in the sixties, whom we called "Mother Ern", grew up in England during WWII. He would eat most anything, because of his experiences with rationing, he said.

One time I was in the kitchen, scrounging for something to eat. I found an old piece of cheese, in a cellophane bag, at the way back part of the 'fridge. It was a cube about the size of a golf ball.

It was covered with a thick layer of mold. I had to cut off all of it but a little piece of cheese the size of a sugar cube, to get rid of this (very fuzzy, and blue-green) mold.

Ernie came in, saw what I was doing, and said, "WASTE! WASTE!", and gobbled down the mold.

He didn't get a swollen uvula, to the best of my knowledge.

Kirk, could it be a mere coincidence? Maybe you got a touch of the flu?
