Wormer question (Pet Care)

Can anyone tell me if it is possible to use "Ivomec Pour On" cattle wormer for an adult dog? It comes in a 250 ml container. It contains 5mg ivermectin/ml. I have read about using injectable wormer orally, how about this other?

People in the sheep business use this pour on as a drench. I haven't I use the injectable one only. I would not use it on my dog. I know alot of people use the horse and cattle products on the dog but use a drench type not a pour on. Just my opinion it seems less stress on my mind to buy doggie wormers.

be sure to get your dog heart worm med. our dog got heart worms cause we didn't luckly he made it but it took a long time and was expensive. just take your dog to the vet they'll get him all set up and take a blood test to see if your dog has'em. heart worms can kill dogs.

Loretta are you talking about heart worm prevention with Ivermectin or are you talking about intestinal worms like hooks, round worms and whips? What worms to you have? The worms that we have here in East Texas are not touched by using Ivermectin orally so I doubt pouring on Ivermectin would help either, well perhaps for mites? Pyrantal products are formulated for horses and dogs, and can be used interchangably, and some bensazoles will work on some worms. Valbazen, Panacur, Safeguard etc....Vicki

Hi. I'm looking for heartworm prevention. Thanks in advance for the advice.

Loretta:

Please do not use this form of Ivomec for your dog -- especially if your dog is a standard collie or shetlie, or part collie or sheltie. Ivermectin products can be fatal to some lines of collies, whether orally or dermally administered. The chemical's action causes irreversible liver and neural damage. Get the heartworm meds from your vet. Costs a teeny bit more, but might save your pet.

I use the injectable cattle ivermectin in my whippet and mutt but I give it orally. Ivermectin is a contact wormer, and I suppose the pour-on would work, but I'm not sure of dosages. Why don't you just call your vet and ask her if you can use it and at what dosage? The vets that I have worked with are usually quite willing to share information of this kind.

Loretta, a sample of blood will be needed from your dog to test for the presence of heartworm before any drug is used. Take the dog to your Vet. If drugs are used and there are heart worm larvae present in your dogs bloodstream, you are going to kill your dog. Good luck.

Anita is correct,we foster strays and the vet will not use ivermectin if he even suspects any collie type heritage in them.We have used it on our purebred hunting dogs though.Make sure there is no confusion, ivermectin comes in oral and injectible does'nt it?
