Free chicken food!! And Revenge!

Someone posted on this forum about Japanese beetles...how the chickens caught them when they were out walking. So I got to thinkin'...hey, what's to stop me from catching the little buggers ON PURPOSE to feed the chickens? So off I go to the local Wally World and buy a handy-dandy BAG-A-BUG and stick it out in my backyard. By afternoon it was full and I took the little treasure out to the chicken house...and darned if those ladies don't just LOVE to eat Japanese beetles!!

I'm getting so many beetles in that BAG-A-BUG I empty it twice a day, morning and evening. The ladies have learned what comes in that bag, and they have more than once snatched it out of my hand as I walk into the chicken house.

I tried just hanging the thing in the chicken house but didn't attract many bugs so I went back to the yard. I hang it where I don't care if the beetles come in and nibble on the plants, and I figure the good they're doing the ladies outweighs any extra bugs the trap attracts in my yard. (Though there are already so many there, I don't see how this could pull in more!)

And, yep, it is nice to have the ladies gobbling less feed...and sweet revenge to see those nasty little beetles get gobbled!!

Great idea, Cass. Think I'll try it with my fly trap from the barn!!

We had a bad infestation 2 years ago, and let the chickens into the vineyard (normally a highly fortified restricted area). They weren't interested at all. Then we sent the kids in with tennis racquets. The kids popped the flying beetles, had great fun, and the chickens loved the semi-comatose bugs on the ground. After a while the chickens were chasing the flying bugs too.
