"I'm Not Arrogant" Says Toon Star

By Tony Toon Date: 16/7/2001

Craig Bellamy in many ways made a rod for his own back when he joined Coventry City by proclaiming what a great player he was. That stuck in the minds of many Sky Blue supporters, particularly when the Welsh international failed on many occasions to produce the goods.

And just like our own Supermac, who made wild boasts before the FA Cup final (1974) and League Cup final (1976), the opposition were only too pleased to make him eat every word. Self flattery means bog all!

But Bellamy, who has the self belief to start his new Newcastle career wearing silver boots(!), says he doesn't want the Toon Army to think he is arrogant.

"Everyone who knows me says I am not arrogant. I'm confident in my own ability, and there's a difference. I had a tough spell with a struggling team at Coventry, but the experience has made me stronger."

Personally, he can wear his grandad's slippers for all I care so long as he does the business on the park.

GOOD LUCK TO HIM!

This from a player that three years ago told FourFourTwo that he was the new Ronaldo.

New Ronaldo - let's hope so - I like self confidence - there is a danger of it becoming arrogance only if the talent is not there to back it up. Bellamy had a bad patch and his words came back to haunt him but he has every chance now to prove how good he is.

From my own viewpoint I adopt a policy of modesty - in fact I think I'm probably the most modest person of all time.
