The Beeb says:

French striker Laurent Robert has arrived at St James' Park to finalise his move to Newcastle United. The protracted transfer saga is finally set to come to an end, with Robert expected to complete his move on Tuesday or Wednesday.

The 26-year-old Frenchman faces a medical before putting the seal on a £9.5m deal.

That would be a huge relief to Magpies boss Bobby Robson, who claims the French B international is a combination of Ryan Giggs and John Barnes.

Robert played in PSG's 0-0 draw with Lille in their season's opener on Saturday.

Robson needs support for Shearer and Cort Robson, 68, has spent the summer searching for reinforcements to add to the left side of his squad.

In Robert, he sees a man to support front-line strikers Alan Shearer and Carl Cort when they return from injury.

Having played in the Intertoto Cup for PSG, the Frenchman could not represent United in the same competition.

But, after being withdrawn from the French side's semi-final, he would be eligible for the Uefa Cup - should Newcastle qualify.

Provided there are no problems, Robert could make his debut in Robert Lee's testimonial clash with Athletic Bilbao on 11 August.
