railroad cars in the sunset dist.

greenspun.com : LUSENET : San Francisco History : One Thread

I saw the tail end of a show about the railroad that used to go by the beach in SF. The host said that the sunset dist. became a sort of "Train car town" for a while and that some of the traincars are still in place...that houses were built around them..help?

A number of trolley cars were used for residences during the post-earthquake "housing crunch". A group of them out by the beach were known as "Carville". Do a 'net search on that name at Google.com as well as at the usual SF history sites. There should be several mentions.

I have an article and some photos about Carville on my web site about cable cars: http://www.geocities.com/cable_car_guy/cablecar.html

Look in the San Francisco Miscellany section.
