Thursday August 02 03:22 PM EDT E. Coli Contaminates Streams

People in southwest Oregon are being warned to stay out of the water.Ashland health officials say that high levels of E. coli bacteria (news - web sites) have been found in Ashland Creek and several other local streams.

Although most varieties of E. coli are safe, Department of Environmental Quality spokesman Brad Prior says the fact that the bacteria are there probably means that other harmful elements are also in the water.

Prior says that near-drought conditions in the streams -- low water volume and hot temperatures -- make streams more susceptible to E. coli contamination.

Fecal matter may have caused the contamination.
