This is a reply to a question on MCD from the August 2001 issue of The Stockman Grass Farmer.

There is a belief among some graziers in the UK and Ireland that the use of a pour-on organophosphate for heel-fly control was the real cause of BSE. They note that the feeding of meat and bone meal was common throughout Europe and North America for decades and that only the countries that used this particular product have had BSE outbreaks. I have no way of knowing if this was the case or not. I have noticed the mainstream European farm magazines are starting to very quietly say there may have been some linkage to organophosphate.

The article is "Animal Pharm" by Mark Purdey, an organic farmer, who didn't spray his cattle with organophosphates for warble fly - no cows born in his herd developed mad cow disease.
