LONDON (AP) -- An explosion at a gas-fired power station in northern England killed two men Wednesday and seriously injured two others, police said.

There was no immediate word on the cause of the blast at the Teesside Power Station near Redcar, 240 miles north of London, but police said there was no danger of further explosions.

Two men suffered severe burns and have been taken to nearby Middlesbrough General Hospital, police said.

A statement released by Enron Teesside Operations confirmed "an explosion and subsequent fire" around 2:45 p.m.

"Emergency services were called and it is now under control and there is no danger off site," the statement said.

A plant spokesman said the site had been evacuated after the blast and that the company was working with health and safety officials. The situation was under control, he said.

"There is no danger of any further explosions or of any off site complications," a spokeswoman for local police said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Enron is part-owner of the 8-year-old plant, which has a large natural gas processing facility.
