Name of book needed - mentioned in Tightwad Gazette

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Hi, I remember in one of the Tightwad Gazette, there is a book mentioned that tells you how to make brand-name type mixes/products at home. I can't find my TG books - they are all in boxes awaiting some bookshelves to be built. If anybody can look this up for me and give me the title and author, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

Cheaper and Better by Nancy Birnes (may be out of print) try Amazon and your library. She also wrote another called Zap Crafts, which was microwave-based recipes. Not as many mixes--more crafts and misc. stuff. The first one is much more useful.

Another mix book in print (not mentioned in TG) is Make a Mix, by Eliason, Harward, and Westover. General mixes with recipes to use them.

Christina, go to www.topsecretrecipes.com. Some neat stuff there. Never used any of the recipes but plan to do so soon. Sounds good anyway.

Thanks, GT the Nancy Birnes one was the one I meant. Had it once from the library a while back, but now I'm hunting online (and at booksales) for it.

Hi Christina, I found the book you're talking about at

http://gator.clickthebutton.com/x.cgi?op=click2&id=32&data=url%3Dhttp% 3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fexec%2Fobidos%2FASIN%2F0060960833%2Fqid% 3D997720734%2Fsr%3D1-2%2Fref%3Dsc_b_2%2F107-4802725-1569367%0D%0Avid% 3D1%0D%0Aptype%3Dproduct.book%0D%0Aclientkey%3D3b780283107e8c20%0D% 0Aonce%0D%0Avendor.price%3D%0D%0Aattr.title%3DCheaper%20and%20Better% 20%3A%20Homemade%20Alternatives%0D%0A.optype%3D%0D%0Aprodcode.isbn% 3D0060960833%0D%0A.prodcat%3Dbook%0D%0A

I know this is a heck of an address but Gator found it for me and I tried it and it works. You can copy and paste. It says it's $1.75 and I think it's used. You can check it out and see what you think.

I can't believe it. I tried this address 3 or 4 times before posting it but now I can't get it to work. Sorry!

Try Powell's Books (I think www.powells.com or powellsbooks.com) They are the largest used bookstore in the world. Last time I checked, buy $50 in books (they also stock new books) and you get free shipping. Easy for me to do--I love books! Amazon would go thru them anyway as part of it's network of used bookstores (along with adding a surcharge), so you might as well go direct and buy it from Powell's.

There are also the auctions on Amazon, ebay, and others.... I found a copy in good condition at a library sale. Good Luck!

www.half.com has it for $8.34

You might want to try Better Basics For the Home. I have both books and Better Basics is far superior.
