Buffalo Creek Ranch needs help (Getting Started)

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Buffalo Creek Ranch is 160 acres of tranquil beauty nestled in canyonlands a half mile from a popular canoeing river in north central Nebraska.

The ranch includes hilly pastureland with about 60 acres of trees, 2 spring fed streams, three ponds (two loaded with bass, sunfish and catfish), and my house. I have a small herd of Dexter cattle and some chickens, a dog and a cat. I own the property free and clear.

The wildlife is plentiful: turkey, deer (mule & whitetail), birds, birds, birds, and even a rare cougar has been spotted here.

I've just turned 59 and since I live here alone, trying to keep up with maintaining the land as well as a big garden, a half acre asparagus patch, fixing fences, etc. by myself is frustrating at times.

In short, I could use some help in exchange for a great place to live and much to experience and learn on the edge of the Nebraska sandhills. I have an RV pad with all utilities available or space for a mobile home. There also is work available on area ranches and with the canoe outfitters in the summers.

This would most likely appeal to a semi-retired person who has an RV and would like to park it in a beautiful setting, but I'm open to other suggestions.

Beware: my place is 28 miles from the nearest town and 7 miles to the nearest highway, so you must love isolation. The quiet is excruciating.

Any adventureous souls out there?

Bruce

Response to Buffalo Creek Ranch needs help

Bruce, I hope you find some help. I know how tough it can be taking care of your homestead by yourself. I have a brother who lives in Ames,Nebraska, that's next to Fremont. I have been through the Sandhills and it is a beautiful and remote part of Nebraska. I would think the quiet would be wonderful but I live with Nubian dairygoats and they love to talk to me, and well the sheep are worse. Dexter cattle must not be that noisy. Good luck karen

Bruce - I am very curious - did you always live there or did you migrate? What is it like living so far out all alone? How often do you see or talk to anyone? I guess you don't work a "regular" job other than your ranch. Do you grow the asparagus to sell commercially? How big is your herd of cattle? Are they a source of income for you? What are the winters like? Sorry for all the questions - but I have always wondered about this kind of lifestyle. And, Bruce, I won't be offended if you don't answer my questions!
