Basil ID

I love basil so I decided to grow a bunch of it. I have 8 variety and they all did great...except... the markers on 4 of them became lost. I don't know what kind they are. Is there a web site that shows pictures of herbs? I tryed the libray but none of the books had pictures of the different kinds. I sure do like the cinnamon basil. Today I just took some shoots to make new plants for winter use. If I cut my garden basil back and cover real good with straw will they survive Mo. (zone 5) winter. Most books say they won't survive but has anyone done it. Thanks.....Jamie....

I also live in zone 5 and even the lightest frost kills basil. You can grow it indoors under an ordinary shop light though.

Check "Richters Herbs", (not sure of the spelling), they have the best variety of herbs available and have a web site. The problem is that most basils all look the same. Do you remember which varieties you planted? Through a process of elimination you may be able to identify them. After you have grown them for awhile, you will be able to tell by their scent. Some have larger leaves than others also.

It doesn't even have to freeze for basil to freeze out. Just a really cold night will kill it off. and you will know it, it turns black and mushy. Basil also bruises easily. Handle with care.

Happy Pesto making!

yes, basil is like corn, in that it *loves* heat--grows like wild then.

If you go to www.gardenweb.com they have a bunch of forums - one is called NAME THAT PLANT. YOu just post a pic of the plant in question and usually get a response in a day.
