Making Curtains

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Beyond the Sidewalks : One Thread

My daughter wanted special curtains for her son's room but found the cost just too much - $79 per panel! and she needed four panels to the tune of $319!! These are tab curtains using over-all buckles at the tabs. We selected a nice 100% cotton material bought on sale (washed before sewing) that complimented his room and made these great curtains for a total of about $60 for all four panels. The most expensive part was the over-all buckles. She loved them and they look great. Just perfect for a little country boy's room.

Hi Tren,

I've been occupied for about a month with my daughter's visit then losing my FIL, so I'm just getting around to reading and posting. It's good to hear from you.

The curtains were a light blue with various "cartoony" stars scattered all over. The stars were several different colors of gingham and red and blue bandana prints. The lining is a darker blue, so when the curtains are closed it darkens the room for naptime. Amy was so tickled with them. The material was dirt cheap but the buckles were a little on the expensive side - almost $50. But that's what she wanted so that's what she got. It was still a lot cheaper than buying them and she got exactly what she wanted.

Wishing you enough (and glad to be back).

I've bought (cheap!) flat sheets and used them as curtains, also. There are so many different designs on sheets nowadays that it's not hard to make "masculine" or "feminine" curtains!!

I will often go to rummage sales & thrift stores on "bag day" and buy up so-so clothing just for the buttons or fasteners. At almost $2 for 3 buttons it's waaay too expensive to buy them even at Walmart!! Then either use the fabric for quilts or toss it in the rag bag. i never thought about overall fasteners...

well, okay to tell the truth I've never actually MADE the quilts. But I've got the fabric!!! And dear hubby is threatening to throw some of it away, I have so much... =)
