preparing Septic Holding Tank for winter

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

We recently purchased a cottage with a 800 gallon holding tank for septic(no septic system). Should it be pumped out before winter (we are in Ontario, Canada where winters can be fairly severe) or left fairly full? My concern is it freezing and cracking. Any advise would be appreciated.

it should have been installed so it wouldnt freeze. As to getting it pumped,,, when was the last time? If your not sure, why not. ALl I do with mine,, is add an extra dose of bacteria that breaks down the waste,, I use SEPTIC HELPER 2000. Havnt had a problem

I know that as they are installed they are quickly filled with water, otherwise the ground water can pull them up out of the ground. So logic would say that it should stay reasonably full. You say no septic system, you mean it doesn't have leach lines? Surely the local folks who pump your system will tell you correctly! Vicki
