Compression Nuts

Compression fittings are found in various locations around the house, but are most common under the sink or dishwasher. These fittings typically connect the water supply to the faucet. The novice will often guess at how much to tighten the nuts on a compression fitting. However, there is such a thing as tightening the compression nut too much!

The next time you encounter a compression nut, try this. The nut goes on the copper pipe first, then the ferrule (brass ring), then push the pipe into the fitting as far as it will go. Tighten the nut by hand, then turn it one revolution by wrench. Turn the water on gradually and check the fitting for leaks. If there is a drip, tighten the nut just enough to stop it.
