Golden Gate Park Barrel Murders - 1991(?)

greenspun.com : LUSENET : San Francisco History : One Thread

Does anyone know where I can fimd information to this old crime? I would like to find out more about this. I first heard about it in a criminal justice class I took a few years back.

I know the murderer was a former cop, and that the barrel victims were not his first.

I just want to know where I can find out more about these murders and the others he committed. I can't remember his name either, and that makes it hard to check, and I don't kmow for sure if it was 1991 .

Thanks!

Are you in the city? The on-line archives only go back to 1995, so if you can get to the Main Library, you can look through the microfilms of the newspapers for that time period. The indexing is pretty good.

I found one on-line reference to it. It's kind of eliptical, being a post by someone writing from prison, and it doesn't give a name:

I believe this crime occurred in 1983.

I can answer this question and some others I have seen here but I havn't had much time and I have been trying to stay off line because of severe back problems.-- I remember when these murders happened because I had walked through Golden Gate Park that very day back in 1983. The guy's name was Jack Sully. He was a former police officer from Millbrae or maybe San Mateo but was then running an electronics business which may have been a front for tafficking cocaine. He was convicted of first-degree murder in the deaths of a pimp, his prostitutes and a cocaine dealer. He claimed that he didn't do it and later it was established that his secretary murdered at least one of the victims which he had been charged for killing. She didn't get the death penalty and may be getting out on payroll pretty soon. Sully was sentenced to die in the gas chamber at San Questin I believe in 1986 but I don't remember him being executed.-- If anyone is really interested in pursuing the matter, you could visit San Quentin and talk to the woman secretary. There are an awful lot of lonely women in prison who would love to meet people from the outside during visiting hours.-- remove * to email

I've just seen the murder on Discovery Channel, they have made a program about it.

It was 1983.

Maybe you could contact them.

Good luck.

It was a long time ago. We saw something about serial killers. I know that one of victims body was dragged on a rural road. After being shot by an altered 38 that showed no riflings on the bullet. He had removed the barrel which left an odd entrance wound. This was not one of the barrel murders however. I know when tracked down he had rented an electronics warehouse. The cops said it was more like a torture chamber. The sado-masochistic for real. He was a former cop. They tried him by blood/hair evidence. They convicted him on five but due to extra blood they think he killed 6. That's about all I know. My only curiosity is whether he was executed.

I KNEW JACK SULLY BACK IN THE 1970s.HE WAS A POLICE OFFICER FOR MILLBREA,CALIFORNIA.HE HELPED ME OUT, IN A FEW OF MY TEENAGE MISHAPS.HE DATED MY BEST FRIEND FOR A WHILE.HE WAS ALWAYS REALLY NICE AND VERY KIND THAN.I DON'T KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO MAKE HIM DO THESE THINGS,BUT IF YOU KNEW HIM THAN, YOU WOULD NOT HAVE EVER IMAGINED HE COULD DO THESE THINGS. I DON'T KNOW IF HE WAS EXECUTED, BUT I WOULD BE CURIOUS TO FIND OUT.

I did a lot of research after starting this subject, and have gotten email from a few folks since then. I appreciate all the information I have received.

Apparently, there is a program seen on the Discovery Channel called "The New Detectives" covering Jack Sully's crime(s). I have not seen it yet, but plan to keep my eyes open for the next broadcast.

I am not sure it will cover all the victims he is alledged to have killed - but, what I was told in the class I took was it was at least 5 and perhaps more prostitutes he killed in addition to the barrel murders.

As far as I know, there haven't been any executions at San Quenton for MANY years, and should there be in the future, he wouldn't be the first one.

Any one have anything new or more? Feel free to email me.

Thanks!

A FRIEND OF MINE STILL OWNES THE FORD TRUCK THAT JACK SULLY DELIEVERD THE BARRELS TO G.G.PARK AND I BELIEVE HE BOUGHT IT FROM SULLY'S BROTHER. HE MAY EVEN WANT TO SELL IT AND I DO KNOW IT IS RUNNING AND IN GOOD SHAPE. DAN

My friend was one of the people murdered. Her name is Katherine Barrett. She was the alleged cocaine dealer but the truth is that she was a casual user (it was the 80's) that dealt a tiny bit on the side. I accidently tuned into "The New Detectives" episode that portrayed the incident and found it only somewhat accurate. I was supposedly the last person tosee her alive before her disappearance and murder.

Found the court transcripts (partial) for Sully's conviction online at:http://online.ceb.com/calcases/C3/53C3d1195.htm

Its an interesting albeit disturbing account.
