Today, September 8, the Catholic Church celebrates the birthday of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Church also honors, in a special way, the following friends of God, saints whose souls are now in heaven:

St. Adrian of Nicomedia (Turkish, converted pagan guard of Christian prisoners, martyred in 304)
St. Ina (English, abdicated King of Wessex, monk, d. 727)
Bl. James Fayashida (Japanese, Dominican tertiary, beheaded in 1928 at Nagasaki)
St. Kingsmark (Scottish, chieftain)
Pope St. Sergius I (Sicilian [son of Syrians], reigned from 687 to death in 701)

If you have anything to share about these holy people, please reply now -- biographical episodes, prayers through their intercession, the fact that one is your patron saint -- whatever moves you. If you are interested in one of these saints and want to find out more about him/her, please ask. Information is sometimes available on the Internet.

All you holy men and women, saints of God, pray for us.
God bless you.
John

Dear John: You had a magnificent idea to give everyday's list of Saints. I visit your postings and as you can see I have sometimes commented on some of the Saints' life. Today I have a small suggestion to make: Your postings begin with "The Catholic Church celebrates ..." and to me it sounds a little as if the Church were something distant and different from each one of us. After all, WE are the Church. Therefore my suggestion would be : why not start the list of Saints with something like: WE CATHOLICS IN OUR CHURCH celebrate.....

God bless you, John, and keep the good work.

Thank you, Enrique, for being interested in, and contributing to, these threads about the saints.
I think that you have a reasonable idea about beginning each message with something more personal. I have been considering ways in which to articulate a pleasant introductory phrase. There is something that doesn't "sound" quite right in the one you suggested ("We Catholics in our Church"). Two others have come to mind, and I wonder if you (and anyone else who stops by) would express a preference:
"... we sons and daughters of the Catholic Church ..." [I think that the pope used this expression.]
"... we members of the Catholic Church family ..." [This expresses our adoptive childhood in the Father, Jesus's brotherhood, and Mary's motherhood.]

God bless you.

John: I give my vote to the second introduction you suggest.

John,

I like the "... we members of the Catholic Church family ..." .

Thanks, Enrique and Glenn.
I did use that introduction yesterday (Sunday), but then forgot to change my "template," so I accidentally reverted to the old style today (Monday). I have changed it in preparation for tomorrow.
