The Savannah, Albany & Gulf RR was chartered in 1847 and in 1854 was opened from Savannah to Screven, Ga. The Albany & Gulf RR was formed in 1860 to extend the SA&G from Screven to Thomasville, Ga. Due to the war, construction was delayed, but the A&G acquired the SA&G in 1863. Afterwards the A&G became the nucleus of The Plant System(SF&W) which then became the ACL's entry into Florida.
