Calumet Caltar 254mm lens question

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Large format photography : One Thread

Hi,

I have an old Ilex-Calumet Caltar 254mm (f6.3)lens that I'd like to use on an 8x10 camera. Haven't much luck combing thru' the internet for information about this lens. Does anyone here know it's image circle and if there's much room for movements?

Thanks,

Aaron

At the bottom of this list is a section call "Lenses: Classic". Search or look for Ilex or Ilex Caltar lenses. One of the answers states they use this lens in 8X10 and like it. Specific info on these lenses is difficult to come by. Good luck, Russell

Hi,

Thanks for the response. So it barely covers 8x10!

Does anyone else know more? Specific image circle? sharpness at the edges?

Thanks again,

Aaron

The 6.3 is a Tessar design which probably is much sharper in the middle than way out in the exremes which you'd have to be using at 8X10. Should be good for 5X7 and 4X5.

I would be contact printing. Would less sharp corners be noticeable in this case?

Thanks,

Aaron

Probably not. I've made some nice pics with a Kodak Ektar 127 f4.7 on 4X5 which is a nearly identical situation I think, and even enlarged to 16X20 they are acceptable, at least to me. Those last 4 words are the most important.
