DJ Federal Agent/Dead/TV -2: No Confirmation Yet
DETROIT (AP)--A federal agent was shot at a federal building in Detroit on Friday and died, two television stations reported. The agent was shot inside the federal building where the Detroit FBI is based, police said. The person who shot the agent was then shot, police said. Detroit Receiving Hospital spokeswoman Mattie Majors said she couldn't comment on the condition of the agent, who was taken to that hospital. WDIV-TV and WXYZ-TV reported the agent died. Witness Joel Vander Linden said he was waiting in line at the metal detectors when he heard a man behind him "complaining loudly...cussing." The Warren man said as he was going to the elevators, he heard a "boom," but was rushed out the door before he could see anything else. A man was seen taken out of the federal building on a stretcher with his neck in a brace and a pile of bandages on his abdomen. He was put in an ambulance, which left under police escort. The area was cordoned off with police tape. The shooting occurred at the McNamara Federal Building in downtown Detroit, two blocks from the Theodore Levin U.S. Courthouse, where earlier in the day a hearing was held for three men arrested in Detroit during an FBI investigation into a man on the agency's "watch list." A U.S. magistrate ordered the men detained. (END) DOW JONES NEWS 09 -21 -01 02:35 PM

Officer Dead After Being Shot At Federal Building
DETROIT, 3:36 p.m. EDT September 21, 2001 -
A man allegedly walked into the lobby of the McNamara Federal Building on Michigan Avenue and shot a federal protective services officer. The officer has died from his injuries.
The gunman was also taken to a local hospital after being shot, but his condition is unknown at this time.
A witness said that a white male walked into the federal building at about 1:30 p.m. and aimed at the officer.
"He just walked up and started shooting," David Edwards said.
The FBI is located in this building. The perimeters of the building, at 477 Michigan Ave., are now closed off including Michigan Avenue at First and Cass. The FBI is considering the building a crime scene and has closed off the building. It has been partially evacuated.
All federal buildings have been on heightened security after the Sept. 11 attacks, but the gunman entered the building and began shooting before he had entered the McNamara's security checkpoints located about 20 to 30-feet away from the front door.
The FBI will be holding a press conference about this shooting this afternoon.
Also, many questions loom as to the possible connection too a trial going on a few blocks away at the Theodore Levin U.S. Courthouse for three men arrested for having false documentation. The men may have been associated with Nabil Al-Marabh who was taken into custody Wednesday night in Justice, Ill., a Chicago suburb. Authorities are questioning him about possible links to Osama bin Laden.
At this time, authorities say that there is no indication that the shooting may be linked to the hearings.
