Have a Disaster Plan for Emergencies All kinds of disasters can affect your family, such as the recent terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington, D.C. or other more common natural disasters, including hurricanes, tornadoes, floods and fires. Create a plan for your family to handle emergencies. Keep emergency phone numbers posted in the kitchen. Have a designated place where family members should gather and a contact plan for those not at home. Talk with your children about how to deal with these bad events.
