Global or World Government ?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Beyond the Sidewalks : One Thread

I hate to admit this (sorry EM) but what is exactly meant by by a global or world government? I know alot of people object to it. But since I don't really know what it is, I'm not exactly sure what the objections are either. The first thing I think of is what style govrnment would it be? How would we ever decide? But on the other hand maybe we could overcome alot of prejudices.

Really, truly, I don't want to start anything. I just want to be educated and hear how you all feel about such a thing because I respect your opinions. Thanks!

Huh? How'd I get in on this here one?

Don't feel bad, Denise, I don't really know what people mean by New World Order [NO I don't mean anything to do with wrestling! ;-)] or One World Government either. I suspect that it's one of those things that has a whole bunch of assumptions and emotional attachments to people's views of whatever they mean by such terms.

We have more than our fair share of conspiracy theorists around here, and their #2 gripe is the UN taking over the role of the US govt (their #1 gripe). I would imagine a world govt would be like the UN, only we get to elect our representatives (maybe an improvement over the present system?!). The European parliament is a pretty close example. A world govt might have the advantage of being multi- cultural and multi-religious.

Yah I'm pretty confused about this subject too. I know that alot of people when they hear One World Goverment they consider it evil. But when I think of what our world should be like, we should all be joined, but maybe it shouldn't be with government but with love. Beats me.

Em, you mentioned on another thread how surprised you were that some of us didn't know about the atrocities committed against the people (especially women) under the Taliban. You said your daughters had been active on the topic for a long time. I was just apologizing for not being more informed :) You sound like the kind of Mom I'd like to be. So I guess I have to become more informed and a bit more of an activist. I'm working on it!

Didn't all the Star Trek movies and the series Deep Space Nine (I loved that show!) both have World Govts.? Maybe it's in the future for our world, but I don't think we're gonna get there without alot of fighting first. And it definitely needs to be governed with love!

Their theme song goes, "We are the world...." I think they started it in the early 90s and have re-released it.

Sadly, Marcia, I don't see ANY segments of our society being civilized enough to live under one government, nor those who aspire to being in the government as honest and incorruptible enough to serve there (and the very few that were would get disgusted and leave government!).

I love Star Trek, but I also think it's unlikely. Supposedly, aliens landing on this planet would 'unite' the whole world, but I think that's a crock. Unless they came in, 'guns blazing', on all the various countries and factions of this planet, there would be some celebrating that their enemies were shot up, others trying to make alliances and use the aliens against their enemies, etc. Even if aliens came with totally peaceful actions and stated peaceful intentions, there would be PLENTY ready and willing to blast them to smithereens because of what the might/could do, or simply because they were not human. Is that cynical enough? Sorry, it's how I feel. I read once, "A cynic is merely a disappointed romatic" -- and I guess that's true in my case.

Joy, I hate to say it. But I think you're probably right.

So does this mean that I'll never meet Odo or Data???

Wow Joy, we must be channeling the same cynic!!! ;>) I am trying to stay in the "now" because even the slightest peek at the future sets me into deep depression bordering on dispair. I want to hold peace and love in my heart and mind and it does not seem possible in my daily world. Gary and I are isolated even in our "peace church". Religious intolerance seems to be the guide.........I used to be Catholic and the only religious leader beside Marianne Williamson who seems to be pushing for peace and tolerance (other than the quakers) is the pope. Interesting.

Diane, don't forget about the Dalai Lama's appleal for peace and tolerance from all peoples. As far as sheer numbers are involved, he has quite a following!

How many have ever seen the movie "Seven Years in Tibet"? It's a very interesting movie and I believe a good example of how "talking peace" just won't work. The Dalai Lama and Tibetans tried it with the Chinese. Today Tibet is part of China and The Dalai Lama lives in India.

It's sad things are this way but it is reality, proven time and time again throughout history.

That was the movie with Brad Pitt, wasn't it?? It was excellent! Haven't seen it showing up on any of the cable or satellite channels lately...wonder why??

dahhhhhhhh.......annie, can't believe I didn't mention the Dalai Lama!! The thing is that he has been doing it for so many years and I guess those of us who have listened to him so long forget. Geesh, I wish this would all go away.

Diane: I just heard a program on Wisc. Public Radio and they were interviewing the top guy in the Unitarian Universalist church. He was mentioning an outreach program they're initiating to provide a protective, helping hand to American Muslims and Siekhs, who incidentally are also and mistakenly being "targeted" by the ignorant backlashers.
