Seed catalogs

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Have been on vacation for the last 2 weeks. Got in on the tail end of someone talking about Gurney and Fields seeds catalogs going out of business. I tried to call them and got a weird busy signal (both companies). Strange that they would BOTH go out of business. Sad because they were good old stand-bys. Anyone know what is going on?

Belle, a friend of mine in the business told me today that the parent company has declared bankruptcy. She said the catalogs owned by that company will be put out (have been bought) later in the year, probably mailing December through February.

Both Gurney and Fields were the same company -- well, kind of. They were either brothers or cousins (I can't remember which) and they sold out to an umbrella company which included Spring Hill and Stark Bros. They went bankrupt and have ceased business.

Also, in case you didn't know, Troy Built has also gone bankrupt but another company has applied to the court to take them over. When I called them (I have a warranty on a tiller yet) they said they are making good all orders and another company will be servicing the warranties. They have, however, discharged 2/3 of all employees.

Really a sad thing to see these companies going under after all these years.
