Miniature and not so miniature horses

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I just bought my daughters a miniature horse colt. Don't have any idea what breed it is...it was just cute. It's set for pickup in December when it is weaned. Any good websites or books on minis anyone can reccommend?

Also we have an Arabian filly on the way....weaned in November. It's registered pure-bred...the owner says....I really don't know alot about such things...any tips on how to check it out? This horse was a homestead-warming gift from a good friend of my wife...so no money was involved...I'd just like to know.

Hello! Make sure you know an AWFUL lot about young horses before you consider taking on a couple of weanlings, cute or not. They are powerful and can be dangerous due to their lack of training and experience. Get all the help you can, and don't expect them to be like puppies. That said, enjoy them and be safe!

The American Miniature Horse Association may be of interest:

AMHA

Since no two stockmen do things alike, here's info from google.com and you can check out all the mini sites:

Mini Horse Sits

Registered horses come with registration papers so the horse can be transferred to your name. The breeder will include a copy of the lineage of the horse. This lists the sire and dam on both sides and goes back 6 generations. You can also write to the Arabian Horse Registry for info on your horse, once you get the papers:

Arabian Horse Registry

This may not work the way I've sent it! -G- If not, I'll send it another way.

The Arabian filly's parents have to be Registered, and the owner would have to file for application for registry of the filly, doesn't cost much, just paperwork to have done. Sure makes the filly worth more though!

I have Arabians and minatures. With the Arabians the parents have to be registered and blood typed or DNA tested (required in 2002) and when you register the colt it is either blood typed or DNA tested. I just registered my yearling filly and DNA tested her and her sire and dam. The minis parents have to be registered with AMHR and/or AMHA. They have to be under 34" at maturity to be registered with the AMHA. Both Registries give temporary papers until maturity then you submit for permanent papers.
