How to print 3x4 on Omega D5XL enlarger?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : B&W Photo - Printing & Finishing : One Thread

I've been asked to do some 3x5 size prints from 35mm negs. I've never worked with that small a print before and I'm having some problems using my D5XL Omega enlarger. Perhaps nows a good time to find out what those measurements on the rail mean ;)..I've got the lamp head cranked as far down as it goes but I still have to elevate my easel about 6/7 inchs to get to 3x5..I understand that there may be some sort of adjustable stageing device to lift and level the easel out but I've just been using a cardboard box!! Not very precise I know..Anyone have any suggestions on how to do this properly? thanks...

Bill:

Try using a longer focal length lens. When I make 3x5s on my Beseler 45M, I have to use a 105mm lens to get images that small.

In my experience, any sort of jury-rigging is okay if it gets you the size image you need. Setting the easel on a few books works for me, and is a lot cheaper than buying another lens -- unless you plan to print a lot of small prints.

I've done it both ways--books and longer lens. Books are fine for occasional need, but if it's more frequent, a longer lens would be worthwhile. You can get a suitable lens on ebay for < $50. You won't need a great lens since you are enlarging it so little. So, unless you have some other use for it, don't spend a lot.

I print these sizes from 35mm using lenses for 120 size film. I also charge more to print these little prints as they are a real pain in the butt to do.
