U.S. nuclear submarine leaves without notice

Monday, October 1, 2001 at 18:30 JST SASEBO — The U.S. nuclear-powered submarine Bremerton on Monday left the southwestern Japan port of Sasebo in Nagasaki Prefecture, without the city government giving prior notice to fishing authorities or other concerned parties, sources close to the local government said.

The 6,080-ton, 51 Los Angeles-class Bremerton left the port shortly after 2 p.m. Monday, the sources said. Following the Sept 11 terror attacks on the United States, the Foreign Ministry asked local governments not to publicly disclose the schedules of U.S. submarines. (Kyodo News)
