Information on the Popes' 1984 visit to Vancouver, Canada

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Catholic : One Thread

I am enrolled in a small Catholic College in Vancouver, and am doing an essay on the Popes' visit to Vancouver in 1984. I am searching the internet for information, but to no avail. I would appreciate any information, or information to relative links. Thank you very much. Mieszko

Hello, Mieszko.
I'm sorry to have to tell you this, but events of this kind, which happened prior to the explosion of the Internet in the 1990s, are often poorly covered (if at all). They are just not considered important enough.

I have two suggestions for you:
(1) Go to your public library and speak to the librarian in the reference department. He/she should be able to help you view the microfilms of the newspapers on and around September 18, 1984, the date of the pope's visit. [That's the only bit of info I could find, other than the name of the official organist (Peter Togni).] I bet that you'll find much good information.
(2) Contact the Archbishop's office by phone or mail, asking them for any information they can provide. They probably have a souvenir booklet commemorating the pope's visit and/or they have one or more issues of the archdiocesan newspaper from that time period. These will probably have even more detailed information than the secular newspaper.

Good luck in your treasure hunt.
God bless you.
John
