A very complex question to answer. You might start out by looking at the first chapter of an abnormal psychology textbook to get your bearings. For primary sources (apart from Freud, of course) see Karl Jaspers' once very influential textbook on psychopathology, and any of Pierre Janet's books.

Abnormal psychology entails biological, psychological and sociocultural dimensions. Incorporating, distress, impairment and risk to the individual which suffers from such psychological impairments.
