Headline rejected by the onion

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Beyond the Sidewalks : One Thread

I really, really hope this won't be offensive to ya'll but I was listening to WPR today and they were interviewing a couple of editor/writers from the onion. For obvious reasons they've been trying to be sensitive to the tragedy on 9/11 and the current crisis. The were asked if there'd been any headlines they rejected because, considering the circumstances, were in poor taste.

They thot a couple seconds and said they rejected this:

THE NATION IS STRONGER THAN EVER SAYS A QUADRAGON OFFICIAL

He-he, good one, John!!! Took me a few seconds to get it, had to read it again, then tee-hee :-)!!! For a humor site, though, I don't think it is too offensive, for Pete's sake, humor is what keeps us all from going totally bonkers from the constant onslaught of adversity.

To be able to find humor in something, albeit black humor, simply means we are dealing with it in the best way we can and still function in our day to day lives, not that we mean disrespect to the afflicted. The best jokes were thought up in foxholes at the Front.

OK, I get it now. I was putting the emphasis on the wrong syllable, and I couldn't figure out what some guy with four dragons had to do with national security! Guess I've been reading too many fantasy books. :)

LOL, Sherri! It took me about 20 years to "get" this joke:

"How do you get down off an elephant?"

"You don't, you get down off a duck!"

The only thing I can say in my defense was that I found the joke in a book of elephant jokes amongst others that had gotten into being really weird about ducks. Still, you'd think the light would have dawned sooner . .. . . :-(

Joy, don't you mean the light would have downed sooner?
